Gustav Klimt was born in 1862 in Vienna, and studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts.
His work was heavily influenced by an interest in mythology, symbolism, and the human form. He is best known for his use of rich colours, intricate patterns, and his signature gold leaf technique.
One of a group of artists who sought to break away from the traditional academic style of painting, known as the Vienna Secession, his influence on the Art Nouveau movement, his contributions to the decorative arts, and impact on the art world in general cannot be overstated.
